Charlotte Roofing- why does my roof leak?

Have you noticed that sometimes the roof leaks and sometimes it doesn't?  We had some crazy, heavy rain last week and my roof leaked.  But a couple of weeks ago, when it rained, my roof did not leak!  (I left my little buckets out- just in case!)

What causes a roof to leak?

Well, I've been told by several roofers that the weathering of roofing shingles (asphalt) will not cause leaking.  So what really causes a roof to leak?

Damaged shingles can leave the roof exposed and cause leaking.
Flashings are crucial areas that must be watertight
Shingles should always overlap.  If they are not aligned properly when installed, they may leak
Inadequate ventilation can cause ice, frost and the accumulation of condensation, which can be prevented with proper air circulation.Well, I've been told by several roofers that the weathering of roofing shingles (asphalt) will not cause leaking.  So what really causes a roof to leak?
